Jimmy Carter supports our side.

Quote:
"As a Christian, a trained engineer and scientist, and a professor at Emory University, I am embarrassed by Superintendent Kathy Cox's attempt to censor and distort the education of Georgia's students," the former president declared. "Nationwide ridicule of Georgia's public education system will be inevitable if this proposal is adopted."
I have always liked that man.

Isn't it about time NCSE put this Georgia stuff on its front page? The last news item on the front page is dated 9 January. Surely this should be worth updating it for.

One of the professors who is active in this got the following email from a retired public school teacher in Southwest Wisconsin.

Quote:
Whether you call it evolution or "biological changes over time"
- it still is a phony and bankrupt idea that has no business being
taught in a science classroom!!! It is "evolutionism" and not
evolution and it is a belief system about the past just like
creationism. Science is an invention of man's mind and his conclusions
are usually based on his assumptions. I have never ever seen an
explosion create any kind of orderly design. If people want to believe
they evolved from a rock or an ocean of chemical soup, let them do it
if they want to but don't try to tell our nations youth that's where
they came from. Why should evolutionists try to tell me what they
think I should think. As for me, I was "created" in the image of God
and am proud of it. If you want to find out the "real" facts about our
beginnings go to the web page of <www.answersingenesis.org> !!!!!

Sounds as though the governor isn't going to take issue with the removal of the references to deep time. I suppose this "let's change the nomenclature" business was a decoy to get people's attention away from the fact that they were ditching major areas of science as well as just doing away with a buzzword.

Yeap. That is why it is important to get the word out about what is actually happening. Publicizing the petition is one way. Its existance, location, and success need to find their way into media reports on the standards. Email to friends, family, clergy, and collegues is also a good way to spread the word. One possible letter (prepared by Carlos Moreno of Emory University) appears below.

Quote:
Earlier this month the Georgia Department of Education released drafts of the
future science standards for K-12 education (www.georgiascience.org.). The
GADOE has intentionally weakened American Association for the Advancement of
Science (AAAS) standards by removing any mention of evolution, common descent,
the big bang, or the true age of the earth. This antagonism towards good
science is now threatening the future of Georgias students and Georgias
economy. Reed Cartwright from UGA has started an online petition to GADOE. If
you would like to sign a petition to encourage GADOE to use all of the AAAS
benchmarks, you can do so at
