In Wars of the Jews 2.8.1, Josephus called him Judas the Galilean.

Wars 2.8.1 " And now Archelaus's part of Judea was reduced into a province.........Under his administration it was that a certain Galilean, whose name was Judas, prevailed with his countrymen to revolt, and said they would be cowards if they would endure to pay a tax to the Romans and would after God submit to mortal men as their lords. This man was a teacher of a peculiar sect of his own, and was not at all like the rest of those their leader".

And if Josephus is true, then Jesus of the NT is a coward and a betrayer of the Judas revolution.

It seems to me, the biblical character Jesus, was a very sensible person, loving and caring, but he had a bad temper when the acts of those that presented themselves as very religious, was out of synch with his standards of divine justice and love.

BTW his standards in general agreed with the prophets, especially Isaiah, and rabbi like Hillel. His God was more prophetic than levitical. Actually, without the claims of divinity, he would have fit at the end of the Jewish Bible.

Not at all, because one of the motive of his execution was that he refused to pay the taxes to the Romans. Judas like Jesus like Jacob like Simon like Menahem were leaders of the Galilean party (aka Sicarii) aspiring to be king, that is in rebellion against the empire.

(A parallel could be drawn with the current situation in Iraq.)
