You're still right, however. The official (whatever that means) view of the Church is that truth lies in Church dogma, and the bible--where it differs from that dogma--can be taken with a large grain of salt. Recently, and up to the current pope, higher criticism of the bible has been quite acceptable to the Church bureaucracy, providing not too much noise is made about it.

As for that particular interpretation, it seems to be widely held by a lot of non-fundy Christians--again, those who give any thought to such matters.
