Default People who believe in God live longer and happier lives

I'm in a debate with someone on another forum, and he's just made the claim in the subject. Any truth to it? I've personally never heard such a claim before.

(The debate is here if you wish to have a look: http://forums.jetstreamgames.co.nz/s...439#post529439 - it's on a gaming forum so don't expect too much :P)

Tell him to tell Terrance Cottrell that.

Thanks to Bumble Bee Tuna for the link.

See this article, especially the graphs in the section titled "Belief is Not a Linear Variable".

The belief in God is not the key factor as I get it. Atheistic Communists who meet in small groups who cared about every member ans who showed love and optimism could fill this function too.

I don't support any of these two examples though. Faith in God could wrok becasue it is not supposed to be up to questioning. Its more like a solidarity thing. God is the virtual reality that gives the believers a kind of reference on how to deal with the others in the prayer circle or whatever.

This close knit group experience is what give some faith peopel a more happier or maybe even longer life. They have a network of tlc folks around them or if unlucky a rigid authoritarian group watching every step the ytake. It goes both ways but that is not exceptions of secular ideologies either. Communist groups here in Europe could behave very prudently about such thigns as liberal views on science. Lysenkosim and such. Biologism is still a word used to set people apart by applying a rigid thought pattern on science.

So if we who don't have faith in totalitarian views could unite and actually start local small groups that supported their members emotionally then we would live healthy forever at least in the history books.

Historically speaking Atheists who admitted to Christians that they were Atheists did tend to live shorter lives than Christians who admitted to Christians that they were Christian. They usually passed away within a few hours of their admission.
