Default Patriotic Graffiti - fwded e-mail

I usually put little stock in such things, but, regardless of the origin or veracity of this e-mail, I was struck by its completely secular treatment. And was pleased and moved.

Quote:

Subject: On a rock in central Iowa

I'm told that there is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Highway 25 in

rural Iowa. For generations, kids have painted slogans, names, and

obscenities on this rock, changing its character many, many times.

A few months back, the rock received its latest paint job, and since
then it has been left completely undisturbed. It's quite an impressive
sight.

Take the link below and check for yourself. There are multiple
photos.

I would appreciate it much more if it didn't have the bush quote, especially since it was coupled with what was obviously supposed to be the Confounder-in-Chief himself in his AWOL suit.

Well, yeah, I noticed that, too. That was a detriment. But actually, that made me kind of more impressed with the secularity of it, since the artist appeared to be someone who likes Bush.

I think the rock is wonderful, and I am glad that Rhea brought it to my attention...

But, at the risk of being flamed, I think bitching about the Bush quote is stupid and immature. There are legitimate reasons to be pissed and legitimate outlets for it. saying that this piece of art 'would be better but it quotes someone I don't like' is just plain... closeminded. And it isn't 'obvious' that it is Bush in that suit.

I'm just reminded of that comic who said (when 2 states refused to celebrate MLK day) 'you have to be a special kind of racist to not want to take a day off from work.'

Fine flame me.

Actually, don't flame her. Disagree, but don't flame.

The pic clearly shows a fighter pilot launching a plane off the deck of an aircraft carrier. Further, the quote isn't from his deck-landing photo op; it's from an October post-911 address to the nation. It isn't supposed to be Bush.

Angry

Looks like disgusting militarism to me. But it was clearly executed with skill. I can yell you it wouldn't stay unmolested long if I lived there.
