As I prepare for my eighth surgery on March 14, I am reminded of Ye Olde Addage "Minor surgery is what other people have; major surgery is what you have." Therefore, I am starting a thread where we can all brag about our "major" surgeries, so I can have some company.
Here is my list, with the requisite moaning: 1. and 2. 1990 ganglion excision/synovial mass removal/whatever they are calling it this week, on both wrists. The first one was in June, so I got to enjoy the rains with a fresh wound. 3. 1991 tonsilectomy, except I think I have about half of one tonsil left. Dipstick just wanted my money. 4. 1992 redo on the right wrist. No more cast iron frying pans for me! :crying: 5. 1994 laproscopy for endometriosis, so I threw in a tubal cautery since they had to be in there anyway. ![]() 6. 1998 tumor removal from my jaw. Nonmalignant, a mixoma, but it was replacing my jawbone with itself. It was wrapped around a nerve, too, so now I can't feel part of my lower lip, and dribble soup down my chin. Kissing isn't as much fun as it used to be, either. :boohoo: 7. 1998 bone graft in my jaw, so that I could get dental implants to replace the 5 teeth I lost to #6. Five completely healthy teeth, which really torks me off. I did have good insurance at that job, though, or I'd be . . . well, I'd be refusing to wear regular dentures cuz they taste horrible and most of my lower teeth don't show when I smile, anyway. ![]() 8. Coming soon to a surgery center near you: a redo of my left wrist. You'd think I'd learn, wouldn't you? Plus, my right wrist is starting to get sore, too. :banghead: On the plus side, I have a very nice BF who will be taking care of me during the week that I have one arm in a surgical cast and can't reach my thumb with my fingers. On the negative side, the physical therapy schedule is really going to interfere with our relationship over the next couple months. I think it starts out as x3/week, if I remember rightly. BF lives 100 miles away, so he usually kidnaps me for two weeks at a time to cook for him and wash his socks (I'm on disability, so that's about all I can manage, rather than having a nice, cushy job that actually pays enough to live on without assisstance programs). OK, that's my share of the whining! Who's next? ![]() |

1994 - Emergency orthopaedic surgery performed to repair a perforated artery in my right hand, resulting from an injury at work. Severe blood loss. Fortunately, no lasting damage.
1999 - Car accident, broken right eye orbital bone. Decent scar, but incredibly fortunate healing process. Not too noticeable. 2001 - Dark room, tripped and fell face first into the corner of a metal filing cabinet. Punctured my left cheek. Nike swoosh-like scar now. 2005 - Excision of scar tissue and removal of several sub-cutaneous shards of glass in back of my neck resulting from a bottle smashed over the back of my head. I'd been carrying the glass around for a month before the pain got so bad that I had it X-rayed and they discovered three sizeable pieces which of course called for surgical removal. Honestly though, I don't think that's too bad of a list. I know more than a few people who've fared much, much worse. In each case I received excellent medical attention, and fortunately healed very well. Considering the fall into the filing cabinet could have easily been to the temple, for instance, I consider myself lucky. JD |

I had a anthroscopic bankhart procedure to my right shoulder, because it came out of socket for the 6th (and last) time. That hurt like a bitch after the pain block wore off, let me tell ya. |

1981-1989 - Multiple surgeries to open my Eustachian tubes, the last of which actually resulted in me missing school for nearly a week.
1990, 1991 - Two operations on my toenails to cauterize the nailbeds and prevent chronic ingrown nails. I've been lucky. Everyone else in my family has required multiple major surgeries (almost reaching the level of Cynical Chick's tumor). Unfortunately, I fear I might be having one more in the near future (sob). |

Renal cancer leading to right nephrectomy and ureterectomy.
May 2004 Actually it wasn't so bad...really, and it confirmed for me my atheism. Even when I was quite scared I never turned to old Nobodaddy. johno |
