Default Why did God create our Universe?

I always thought, according to Christianity, God created the universe for humanity. Is this true?

What passage(s), if there are any, explain why God created the Universe?

Coz he was bored. Seriously, I've never heard a good answer to this question. Most of the justification revolves around God making this universe for humans and he made humans coz he loved us, or something like that.

I think that Christians think that God created humanity to have people to worship him. The universe was just a means to that end.

But you could conclude that God made the world for humans from Genesis:
Quote:
26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
However, the second version of creation has humans created to work in the garden:
Quote:
15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

I'm not sure if this has relevance here, but for me the key phrase in Genesis 1 is that after God made something he looked at it and "saw that it was good." Considering all of the pre-Abrahamic explanations for how and why the world was made, such as the Greek creation myth...

http://www.pantheon.org/articles/g/g...ion_myths.html

... the Abrahamic myth that God created the earth for good reasons must have seemed revolutionary. The world is good, God created people to rule over it, we proceeded to royally screw things up, God got pissed at us for screwing up his good thing, and the rest is history.

I think you have to look at extrabiblical sources to understand the context of the creation stories in the Bible. In the sumerian myths which the Bible are based on, it's my understanding that the world (and man) was created as a contest between two demigods (Enlil and Enki) to see who could woo the loyalty of men.

From a Jewish perspective, it appears god created everything to have worshippers. From a Christian perspective, he created everything because he wanted others to share his love with, and from the Muslim perspective, it was so people would follow Islam.

All of these are laughably stupid of course.

Don't forget Col 1:15-17

"15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
16For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.
17He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

And don't you forget that there is not any credible evidence that the writer was speaking for God and not for himself, and that there is excellent evidence that the Bible is not inerrant.

What a wast eo space and resources..
Creating a mindbogglingly wast universe in order to have a tiny tiny speck of dust where he supposedly created some living things.

This god must be a total moron who didn't understand what he was doing or even better, the universe was not created by any kind of gods and what the bible tells you is just a goat herders own ideas of what happened. Not surprisingly incorrect since the goat herder was well a goat herder 2000+ years ago and didn't know better.
But today we do and still we have a lot of goat herderes, even in this forum, who uses 2000 year old goat herder logic. It's totally mindboggling how people can be so stupid.

Another related question, is this God's first universe? What did he do "before" he created this one? Nothing (?) ... how boring!

And how long did he wait to create it?
