The idea of discussion is I guess to narrow down our differencess, which most of the time among the religious adherence pretty much so little in existance but have been amplified beyond proportion by dogmas. That is why lately we heard almost zero fighting on religious ground. As a believer I have admited the similarities of teachings in almost across all religions. Fighting for belief is not my game, never had and never will. |

I've had to eat humble pie here at least once (not EoG discussions). This gives me the added satisfaction here of being able to claim I am learning too . |

Interesting topic
I do far more lurking than posting. But when I do join in and debate I like to have a good clue of what I'm talking about. Consequently I don't participate much in the really clever stuff were specific knowledge is required, such as the finer interpretaions of Biblical connotation. I've had my arse kicked because I didn't know stuff, which is no fun at all. If I feel I'm right though and can show good reasoning for why I think I'm right, and this as been known to happen, then that can be most satisfying, especially when ones opponent is obviously engaging in mental gymnastics, in an attempt to counter that reasoning. Also I think I'm a little addicted to the frustration :Cheeky: Of course, who wins or loses a debate is not for the debaters to decide. That would be for the lurkers and readers to choose. Great fun though and beats watching TV phil |

I debate because I have a mile-wide masochistic streak combined with a pathological need for validation.

Because it's fascinating to see how people think. It also amazes me to see how "rational" people can use that rationality to arrive at a host of different answers to the same question. And the quarrels over meaning!!!!!!!!!! Priceless.
Sometimes it reduces itself to deciding what the meaning of the word "is" is. Better yet is the total silence when a simple statement like "The sun stood still," is quoted to someone who insists the statement is true. Fascinating is too mild a word. |

It's a good thing you included the smiley. For a minute there I took you seriously.

I like debating because if the rush it gives my little brain when it efficiently defeats a human's massive brain. What do you creatures do with all that grey matter anyway?
Maybe that's why there is so much internet porn. Besides proving a squirrel's genetic superiority, I also like to think and debating helps me to for coherent thoughts out of the sheer randomness of my lif---- Is that a peanut! Gotta go. |

Seriously, it is a good question. Is our presence here proof positive that we are all compulsive obsessive neurotics? I like to believe that we are all here because we, more than most, care about clarity. And the dialectic is the surest path to it. – Sincerely, Albert Cipriani the Traditional Catholic |

I debate because it creates a "puree of truth". We weed out what is invalid. Through this, we gain knowledge.
