Atlas didn't hold up the Earth: he supposedly stood on the Earth (in the Atlas mountains) and held up the sky.

Of course, the Greeks moved on from this belief, figured out that the Earth was round, and even calculated its circumference. The Bible's authors never managed that, and continued to believe that the Earth was flat and covered by a big dome: from Genesis right through to Revelation.

(from the New American Bible, St. Joseph edition)

People who still believed this stuff in the Greco-Roman world would have been the equivalent of creationists in our own world.

Default Old Testament = relative ignorance of the time

This point about the Ancient Greeks vs The Bible's human authors keeps occurring, but no Christian is able to establish that superior knowledge, moral codes and ethical outlook lay within the Old Testament and that the Greeks struggled in comparison without this knowledge.

Instead, they were ahead of the Bible's human authors on most if not all counts.

No, it's not that the goat herders couldn't tell the difference.

Those poor desert dwellers didn't have the language to describe a rock sitting in the sunlight while they were sitting in the shade. :devil3:

Interesting. Do you often rely on hypothetical positions for your "evidence" or are you just waiting for a bus?

Please, Please, Please can someone try to find an alternate version of it that is scanned more straightly than that crooked scan.

It is like looking at a picture that isn't hung straight... I just want to straighten the image, but can't.

Cool Stars after Fruit Trees

TBT, you have just proven that Genesis is not accurate as written.

If you have to do major alterations to the text to achieve accuracy, then you clearly started out with something less than accurate. The link you provided is a perfect demonstration of how different the Genesis account is from actual science, based purely on the amount of alterations to the text that were made.

Notice that Genesis mentions nothing about a translucent cloud layer, this cloud layer has been invented to cover the clear mistake in the text of Genesis. Genesis 1:16 clearly uses the word created when talking about the sun, moon, and stars, and it’s clearly on day 4. Genesis is massively wrong, and this interpretation simply demonstrates how badly wrong it is.

If I wrote an essay for an American History class, and identified the Revolutionary War as coming after Watergate, I’d get an F. If the authors of Genesis are writing an essay on cosmology, but are placing the creation of stars after fruit bearing trees, they get an F.

Or tilt it so it is at the same angle as the earth. And stick a spindle through it and slice its outer layers off. Hmmmm...I might have a kebab tonight.

Cool Land Creatures before Flying Creatures

Flying dinosaurs came after non-flying dinosaurs. Dinosaurs (flying and non-flying) came after other non-flying land creatures. Flying creatures of any form came long after land animals, by millions and millions of years. :banghead:

Well, it's from Peter Kirby's "Early Jewish Writings" site: www.earlyjewishwritings.com

If it bothers you that much, you could ask Peter to re-scan it, or maybe crop-and-rotate it and email the result to him. That would be cool, as all the existing links to it will then show the straightened version.
