I think it's impossible to know. I haven't looked hard but all the surveys I've ever seen give the number of people supposedly following a particular religion or denomination e.g the one on this at religioustolerance.org. But that says nothing about actual God belief. I get really pissed off at estimates of the number of xians in the world, which are based on the populations of countries that were historically xian like the UK, but which disregard evidence to suggest that followers of any religion could be in a minority (though this is not necessarily true god-believers).

I've got some figures from about a year ago which I'll dig out.
From what I remember, about a third of the world is Christian (or closely related cult). Islam comes a close second, followed by Hinduism. I think Zoroastrianism and Jainism featured in the top 10!

14% are non-religious. Not too bad I think, there is still hope for humankind.

Atheists actually make up less than one-tenth of one percent of the population in many countries where large numbers claim no religious preference, such as the United States (7.5% nonreligious) and Australia (15% nonreligious).

So nyah

And for you Yanks, who like to feel jealous

Top 10 Countries
With Highest Percentage of Atheists (1991)
Country Percent
Atheist
East Germany 88.20%
Slovenia 29.80
Russia 27.30
Israel 25.60
Netherlands 24.10
Hungary 23.30
Norway 14.90
Britain 14.00
West Germany 12.10
New Zealand 11.50

Now, this is over 10 years old and the figures have risen significantly in the UK (I think it's over 50% now)

The last census showed about 15% nonreligious in the UK (2001).

I remember seeing a survey showing about 30% atheists or agnostics in France.

The survey showed many nonreligious people who believed in a God or surpreme being or some kind of pantheism - but also many nominal Christians who didn't believe in God or in any of the fundamentals of Christianity (afterlife, bodily resurrection of Christ, divinity of Christ, hell, Satan, etc).

Yeah. Not to mention the fall of the Berlin Wall occurred in 1989.

I know of some atheists who put 'humanism' down as their answer and who, as a result, will not figure in the 15%.
