That isn't a difficult question. He did so because his efforts were being opposed by representatives of that very group and, most likely, his converts/potential converts were pointing out that representatives of people they held in high regard were opposing him.

I see how one could get there in the standard Acts/traditional inspired view of the Apostle, but from Paul himself...I really can't.
