Warning: Suspension of disbelief is required. Like the author of the following essay, I don't believe in God, but I like to have pointless arguments about him.
This is an article I enjoyed about God and morality. I'll link it, then I'll sum it up for the conveniently lazy. ![]() Read me Okay, the gist of it is this: Morality comes from humans, not from God. That is, there's NO WAY, on examining the Bible, that God could either be moral or otherwise comprehend morality as we know it. This leads the author to speculate on the God story and re-examine the story of Jesus et al. from a completely different perspective, ie., that Jesus came so that God could walk a mile in a human's shoes and finally get some clue as to what an arse he was (the theory being that a unique, unchallenged, omnipotent and immortal god couldn't comprehend the various factors that help us make up a social moral code), and to finally atone not for humanity's transgressions, but his own. I tried explaining this heretical re-interpretation to a Christian and...it didn't really go over well. But frankly, like the author, I find it a much more...well, interesting account than the haphazard and nonsensical interpretation offered by Christians. Sort of like a new and fun way to look at some classical work of fiction. |
