Default Bible Belt missionaries set out on a 'war for souls' in Iraq

Here's an act of total insanity. Hands up anyone who thinks this is going to improve matters in Iraq?

What an ignorant, insulting thing to say...

I do think the xians are probably sinking a lot of money into an unwinnable cause. As the article notes, Iraq is 97% Muslim. When I was a fundy I participated in some mission trips to areas inside the United States that were heavily influenced by the Nation of Islam (and yes, I know that is different from traditional Islam). Basically, the people we ministered to were Southern Baptists while we were there because they wanted the food, clothes, etc. we were handing out. However, once we'd leave, they would cease to be xians until we showed back up the following year. The missionaries discussed in the article are probably having their greatest success as a result of being novel, and it probably gives them a chance to give each other a pat on the back; but I suspect their long-term influence will be minimal...

All they have to do to win over the populace is to destroy the nation's tradition and history, ban all non-christian texts and imagery, cast out the evil demons by physical torture, and burn a few people at the stake.

Give 'em time, they just haven't hit their stride yet.

Anyone else find it highly ironic that if a Muslim "Missionary" ever showed up in these Cristian neighborhoods, these Christians would be the first ones to denounce them?

They are just asking for trouble going there and attemtping to force Christianity on the people of Iraq.

WTF is missionary work if not "a conduit for the gospel of Jesus".

It is only a matter of time, with an attitude like this, that one of these "Christian Relief Workers" will piss off the wrong person and end up being killed or severely beaten. Which of course the military will over-react to, in turn causing even more resentment towards Americans.

They hand out bad food and third rate medical attention because they can't find anyone who wants glass beads any more

It's not a matter of religious intolerance. I couldn't give a damn if they were Sikh, Hindu or Mormon. It's the sheer stupidity (that will hopefully lead to them being shot) that they show. The same stupidity that's permeated this whole invasion. Sometimes I'm utterly gobsmacked when I witness the level of cultural ignorance shown by some of the people there. This is just another example of it.

It's like putting a Missionary in the middle of Andre Pradesh at present. Perhaps they're happy doing it, and believe they will go to heaven when they do get blown up or shot or mutilated, but I still think removing them from the human genetic pool will do no harm. If you stick your neck out into a raised guillotine, I have no sympathy for you when your head gets chopped off.
