By reading the press release again, I now start to think that even the bullae that are spoken about are those that Eilat Mazar found in the Large Stone Building above area G south of the 2-chamber gate on the Ophel. The bullae are those of Gedalyahu son of Passhur and of Yehucal, the son of Shelemyahu the son of Shobi. Other bullae - also from the Neo-Babylonian period - were found. Unless somebody can prove the opposite I am more than sceptical of everything that was reported yesterday. All I could believe is that another portion of the wall already excavated by Benjamin and Eilat Mazar was uncovered. Anything else is problematic. I would be happy to be proved wrong, but the reports do not inspire much trust. I am very sorry to hear about this kind of misleading advertisement to sponsor any further excavation works. This is not the right attitude towards academic work.

Dear wishes

Peter van der Veen

Eilat Mazar is employed by a bunch of right-wing nuts. She is routinely blasted by non-ideological archaeologists for her bible-based methods.

As I recall, Finklestein and others have criticized her dating and excavation methods with this dig. Seems there was a lot of intermixed pottery from different ages. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find the original article that critiqued it.

Dr. Leen Ritmeyer mentions on his blog that the wall may be from the 8th century BCE.
