The edition of De Viris Illustribus that I have access to is that of G. Herding, 1879. He has octavo in the text, apparently following Vaticanus (V), but AFAICT from his apparatus Bambergensis (A) has octavo decimo, Norimbergensis (N) has decimo octavo, and Parisiensis (P) has XVIII. Bernensis (B) has tertio decimo.

It appears to me at first blush that all of these readings (8, 13, and 18) are easily understood as corruptions based on Roman numerals (VIII, XIII, XVIII). They are variations on a theme, not random numbers snatched out of the air.

Perhaps somene with a more modern edition of Jerome can comment, or can correct my reading of Herding. (I am not familiar with the manuscript tradition of De Viris Illustribus.)
