It is not "recently" that Spong became influenced by Goulder. When he was still in college he started reading his stuff. After he read Goulder's Midrash and Lection in Matthew (very, very hard going after the summary...), he had to meet him.

Yeah well when you get to the age I'm at, and Spong is even older, 1991 is close to yesterday.
Do you have access to "Midrash.." by Goulder? I read it some years ago and was struck by the thought that the author was skating pretty close to denying a historical JC. And then I found out that he had "left the faith" some time after. "Midrash.." was the book that convinced me that Q is not a valid hypothesis, but I haven't been able to find the book for years so as to be able to have the detail against Q that Goulder presents. A review of the book, with that detail, would be really handy. |
