				 | Why Does Jerome Call Epiphanius 'Pope'?

I thought only Alexandrian and later Rome used this title. http://books.google.com/books?id=-bA...ius%22&f=false There are many, many other examples. |

Epiphanius is a pope of the greek church, not the bishop of Rome.

‘Pope’ does not necessarily mean a Roman Catholic title. Pope Shenouda III Pope Shenouda III obituary Egyptian spiritual leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church for more than 40 years http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012...ouda-the-third |

Pope O.E. papa, from M.L. papa "bishop, pope" (in classical L., "tutor"), from Gk. papas "patriarch, bishop," originally "father." Applied to bishops of Asia Minor and taken as a title by the Bishop of Alexandria c.250. In Western Church, applied especially to the Bishop of Rome since the time of Leo the Great (440-461) and claimed exclusively by them from 1073. Popemobile, his car, is from 1979. Papal, papacy, later acquisitions in English, preserve the original vowel. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=pope |
