So basically the idea is, if the majority of the word is accurately spelled, we won't notice if a couple of letters in the middle are out of order.

Something about this strikes me as not really news.

I've noticed that sometimes I can't recall how to spell a word, but I can recognize if it's spelled correctly. Their and thier or theif and thief for example.

Sure it is.

Haven't most of you had a more difficult time making sure that at least you had the first and last letter correct than if you just spelled it correctly in the first place?

I just got an email from someone about this phenomenon. It was interesting that I could read the text pretty rapidly with all the misspellings. Nonetheless, I could develop a headache, I think, if I had to read quite a bit of that sort of thing so I hoping we'll try to stick to standard English as much as possible.

For the longest time I read your handle as "Mendicant".

Yeah, I still get that sometimes. Never even thought about it until I showed up here and people expressed their confusion, though. I've never seen it as Mendicant and I suspect I never will, but then it's my handle, so I suspect I wouldn't see it otherwise.

Rob aka Mendican -- oops, I mean Mediancat
