My issue with the atheist community is very focused.
As I interpret the world, "theism" is dismantling, and "atheism" is developing. There is no turning back. At one time the earth was flat, and "God" created Adam and Eve. These and other archaic theist influenced interpretations of the world, that support the existence of a deity, have been proved to be false; or at least reasonably theorized to be false. About the only interpretation theists are able to maintain is the absolute doctrine of theism - the belief in the existence of a deity. Several Years ago, when I recognized that I did not believe in the existence of any supernatural deity, I did not seek community, I did not seek any atheist reference. I came to my own personal conclusions as to how I interpreted the world. At one time, I came to the conclusion that my government is my "religion." For it is the laws imposed by the community and enforced by the established government entities that influence my behavior. For some reason, I was able to understand "religion," separate from "belief and worship." Several months later during my journey through Kentucky, I came across an American Atheist publication. From there I learned of the website, and from there I learned of the planned "Godless March on Washington." I was looking forward to communing with intellectually evolved. I could not have been more disappointed. I was subjected to a poorly constructed mini parade float depicting "God" sodomizing "Uncle Sam." Later I saw a man at the front of the stage wearing a T-shirt that read, "Jesus is a Cunt." The organization of the assembly of speakers was to demonstrate the demographic composite of the atheist community. Besides representatives of professional occupations, there were speakers representing interest groups including Women and Homosexuals. It would seem to reason that atheist organization was courting these demographics for support, yet, everyone involved failed to censure what I thought was inappropriate and insulting demonstration. From the "GAMoW" I learned of local atheist organizations. I began to attend the meetings of these groups, and found them to be irrelevant in their scope of purpose, because of membership confusion and apathy. Obviously, the leadership has a certain vision of success for the organization, otherwise they would refrain from consuming personal time. I began to ask myself, and other atheist via the Internet, why is there such apathy?...The consensus is that there is only one idiom that bonds atheists. At this time I began to investigate the literary works of atheist studies. As it turns out the library of such material is minimal. My initial goal was to uncover the conventions for atheist organization. There are none. Atheists organizations are all autonomous entities. At this time I commenced to study and interpret the Constitution. From my past observations of obsessional Separation of Church and State activists, they demand replacing the Ten Commandments with the Constitution. I was inspired to understand this recommendation. I believe, I have a very secular perspective. For the past few years I have regulated my commitments. The past couple of years I have eliminated essentially all commitments. I have no job. I have no property that requires personal attention. I have no personal relationship with anyone. This lifestyle satisfies the derivation of "Secular." It is from this condition that I am capable of recognizing what is Religion. |

Are you saying private property is religion, and by getting rid of it you are becoming secular?

It has been said that trying to organize atheists is like herding cats. A lot of atheist groups seem to exist just to stir up trouble as a reaction to religion pervading society.
There are organizations like the "Skeptics society" which focus more on critical examination of facts and claims. Or you may have some better experiences with the "Secular Humanist" associations. In my opinion, they have very positive goals and are better organized than the strictly-atheist groups. I can't say much about your secular perspective, there isn't such a thing as a correct way to live. It sounds like you are intentionally isolating yourself from other people... but not everyone in the World is a raging fundy to be avoided. |

I agree with Cofffee that you should look for more Secular Humanist organizations rather than Atheist organizations. It sounds like the philosophy you're looking for is more in line with those and you'll have more of a positive experience.
