Damn, that's neat. I even broke out photoshop to make sure the colors were the same.

Yeah, I broke out my digital color meter utility to check.

The primary and complementary colors are a little different for light, though. There, the three primary colors are red, blue, and green; the secondary colors are magenta, cyan and yellow; and the complementary colors are red + cyan, green + magenta, and blue + yellow. There's an interactive demo of how the primary colors of light mix here. Since these primary colors are based on the three different photoreceptors of your eyes, I believe these complements would actually be more striking visually (and I think the afterimage of green would be magenta, the afterimage of yellow would be blue, and the afterimage of red would be cyan, but I'm not absolutely sure).

Yes, that's all correct. The RGB spectrum is probably more relevant in this case since the monitor is giving off RGB light, but the principle of complementary color contrast is the same. If you mix red and green light together at maximum intensity you get yellow, the complement of blue. The gold color in this art is 210 R 210 G 0B, roughly gold. It may look somewhat greenish depending on how your monitor is calibrated.

I replaced the gold with its complement, which is 210 B 0 G 0 R. When you do this, the moving effect vanishes (at least for me!) Some people may still see residual movement just because the tightly wound spiraling forms suggest movement to the eye. But it's clear the main illusion of movement is generated by the color contrast.

Tried to attach the revamped image but no matter how small I made it, reducing it to a four-color gif, I got a message that it was still too many bytes. :boohoo: Which is odd, cuz then how was the original image posted?

It wasn't posted as an attachment, it was posted as an [IMG] link from a website. If you have a website where you can put your altered image up, you could do the same thing (if you don't, maybe someone else who does have a website could volunteer?)

That's the best illusion I've seen.

Here's an interesting illusion involving color. Its been posted here before. Try to count the black dots:

I come to think of two quotes:

Buddha: Life is an illusion
Yogic saying: "God" is the unmovable mover

Things appear to be moving because we are moving our minds?

Funny how that yogic saying sounds just like Aristotle and Aquinas. . .

Hmm, could you elaborate on this with links or quotes?
