One problem with determining Jewish concepts of the Messiah before say 100 CE is that in their present form the rabbinic sources are either later or much later than that.
It is possible that the tendency in early rabbinic material to speak of the Messianic Age and the Signs of the Messiah's coming, with little speculation about what the Messiah will be like or what he will do, is more about rabbinic attitudes post Bar Kokhba than about earlier concepts. The drastic failure of Bar Kokhba and/or controversy with believers in Jesus as the Messiah may have discouraged Messianic speculation in the early rabbinic period. Andrew Criddle |
