You know what cracks me up about Manichaeanism? (A comedian's cornucopia say you). Just look at this picture and then imagine Mani coming back from the dead and looking at all these Buddhist images and saying 'WTF?'

A -twelfth- century Chinese painting is supposed to be trusted to inform us regarding the cosmology of a religion that died out in the seventh century?
I expect that a good measure of 'artistic interpretation' is also involved, both by the original artist, and again by the eyes of present day interpreters.

I would be very skeptical as to the value of this piece as being any trustworty reflection of actual Manichaean cosmological views.

That is a very very fascinating discovery. It goes to show how far we have to go on learning a lot more about how culture and religion had traveled from one civilization to another in vast distances.

The transfer of Manichaean religion from one place to another may have something to do with being a part of The Great Migration period where we saw what may be the cause of the destruction of both the Han Dynasty and the western part of the Roman Empire.
