I just burned my bridges with one of the two mainly Christian boards I post on after some fuckwit posted that God had told Bush that he was going to be president, and God had told her that she had to vote for him or some such crap. These people should be in a zoo. I don't mind talking with intelligent, enlightened Christians and thankfully I do know some but when i meet people like the above - or people who believe that we're all about to get raptured, or whatever the fuck else - it makes me want to punch my screen as hard as I can. How can anyone LIVE such an unbearably narrow, SMUG little life?

Regarding christians, I dislike much of christianity and many christians to the point of being profoundly disgusted. However, I would not use the word "hate" to describe my feelings. I reserve such a word (and usually only use it in the phrase "I hate so-in-sos guts") for individuals who have REALLY pissed me off in some personal, direct way. Whatever.

That's part of it. I think it also has to do with ego. Many of these people would feel as "important" as autumn leaves falling off a tree in the scheme of things if they did not have god/eternal soul beliefs to bolster their egos. Those who feel they are less than successful in life (in all the ways that matter to them) believe "religious truth" is their ONLY chance to "be somebody", even if it is after (physical) death. OTOH, those who see themselves as quite successful see themselves as especially 'blessed" by their god but believe that it would all be for naught, with a concomitant deflation of ego, if the good life were not life everlasting.

I think this is why godists react so emotionally even when merely told that "so-in-so is an atheist". By merely existing and being an atheist, you are in effect - in the godist's mind - making a statement that she/he is a pompous fool who is really a worthless piece of shit in an ultimate sense (and she/he of course thinks you, he atheist, have a similar self-image, ergo you must be crazy, immoral, not to be trusted, as strange as would be an imagined extraterrestrial being, etc.).

IOW, I see a lot of what goes on in many a godists mind as some really sick shit. (But I don't hate them for it.)

Seriously, if the mods were persecuting you, they'd hide, close, and delete your threads instead of moving them to a different topic forum. They're not stopping anyone from having a serious discussion here, and even in elsewhere both sides are moderated.

If you're looking for the reason why serious discussions don't happen about your topics, look within.
