Because if he waited any longer no one would have believed the stupid story?

The stupid answer is: Because it was the fullness of time.

Seriously - if we could answer that one, would anyone still be an atheist?

God is a hider. He hides in the gaps in human knowledge. When human knowledge was low, he didn't have to hide, and was prevalent, I mean, goodness, the big guy was everywhere: slaughtering nations, walking thru walls, raising the dead, casting out demons, you name it. Now that human knowledge is much higher (technology, science, medicine, psychology, etc), God is nowhere to be found.

Now we only find god's miraculous events in the remote jungles of Africa, or tiny Asian villages where no cameras are around.

God didn't do anything!

It wasn't until around the time that humans got smart enough to invent jesus.

Are you confusing this with a Christian board? Seriously, did you really think a bunch of atheists are going to give you a satisfactory answer?

On a similar line of thinking, although admittedly absurd to the Nth degree is, "Why did got wait an infinite amount of time before creating the world 6,000 years ago from nothing?"
