Default Religious=Obsessed with sex?

Probably because I was a devout mormon for 20 years I have this biais that the uber religious are often obessessed with sex. Mormons think a nice perk of going to the "celestial kingdom" is that one gets to keep their genitals and procreate forever, most likely with plural wives. American society is very religious overall, and what do you know? Sex is the central theme of most TV shows, so are most pop songs and even most office conversations. And if you dare say that there is more to life than sex your friends will think you're strange. Well, isn't there more to life than sex? And on many bulletin boards (notably not this one so much) the hot topics are often centered on sex. Why on earth would people discuss their sex life on public forums?!!!

So what do you think? Are religious people really sex crazed?

I don't think that it is religious people only that are obsessed with sex...I think everyone is...it's human nature to want it, to want to discuss it and such...I mean you even said it, that a lot of forum topics are about sex here (and while, I'm not trying to generalize), it seems to me, that most people on this forum are not religous.
I just figure sex is an important aspect of life, and therefore is talked about often

Most people are sex crazed, yes. The followers of many religions tend to be sex crazy though, and make it into an extremely loaded concept full or moralistic bullshit.

Also, in almost any religion, sex has some special meaning. Even if it isn't some act of impureness.

No more than anyone else.

Darwin helped demonstrate that we are animals, Freud demonstrated that the sexual energy fuels our behavior. What you see in the sex-obsessed media is a glamorization of sexuality, an unrealistic portrayal of it, and the unreality reflects our alienation from more "natural" expressions of sexuality ("natural" = more mundane, more realistic, more down-to-earth).

Personally I blame the glamorization of sexuality on existential boredom caused by a mechanized lifestyle. We're bored with living in climate-controlled boxes and working at unfulfilling jobs where we trade 5 days work in exchange for 2 days off that are probably spent sitting in front of time-killing devices to occupy our minds to the further detriment of our bodies. Our bodies' energies need to be released somewhere, somehow.

No, they are obsessed with people not practicing self control. Everyone else seems to believe that sex is the end all and be all of existance.

I could not agree more. Mass boredom is ruining this culture. Look at the evolution of our culture - millions go to work to be told what to do, and now millions tune in their AM radio and Fox News to be told what to think, and on Sunday they shuffle off to church to be told what to believe. All of this is creating an incredibly empty life for millions, who must fill it with fantasies.
