For Cherokee-
I am sorry you had a bad experience with MJ-ism.... Your whole congregation sounded "out of whack"... but they are NOT all the same.
Neither are all Baptists, Catholics, etc.
I am so sorry you wound up in this "cult like" place of legalism.
Our congregation is not that way. Gentiles are NOT expected to "do" anything. I consider our "Rabbi" as being very open minded- he leaves one to one's own conscience, no one is "forced" or even pressured into legalism.
Cherokee: I spent almost TEN years in a "non-denominational bible based CULT"... so I understand your feelings about spiritual abuse.
I am sorry that your MJ congregation was a "cult".... I am well aware that they exist. They pressure people to "keep kosher", etc.... Ours does NOT do this.
I am very familiar with LEGALISM... and I found much more legalism within the churches I attended.
I hope you find what makes YOU happy- I really do... and perhaps that is NOT attending AnYWHERE- and that is OK!
"bloom where you are planted"....
Wishing you peace -
Kindest regards,

Very kind words - thanks.

I'm glad YOUR congregation isn't pressured into anything; however, realizing I'm painting with a very broad brush, I would say that this is a rarity! The cult I was in was quite active with other MJ congregations and teachers throughout the U.S. and Israel, and I found that most were the same. We had many of the "big-names" within the messy-movement speak and teach and sing at our congregation, and they often dressed the same, taught the same things, and encouraged the same kind of participation. I'm glad yours is different.

And, I am happy now. It has taken a fair amout of healing, but I'm "blooming!" I would STILL encourage you to question everything! Good luck.

what pisses me off the most is that the Jews for Jesus try to make Christianity "Jewicized". They call Jesus "Yeshua", and they give Hebrew names to the New Testament (B'Rit Hadashah).

Any Jew with a basic understanding of the Torah will know that Jesus as described by Christianity cannot be the Messiah.

It is common in Jewish culture to have a very high tolerance of Jews becoming atheist, or buddhist or New Age, and a very low tolerance for converting to christianity. The reason is 2-fold, at least in my opinion. 1)Jews don't proselytize. You'll never see a Chasidic rabbi standing on a street corner trying to get Non-Jews to convert to Judaism. If non-jews try to convert, they go though a long process of trying to discourage them as a matter of policy. 2)Jews who convert to christianity almost invariably abandon their identity as part of the modern jewish community and with that they abandon all the traditions that are vital to Judaism.
Sounds like ethnocentrism to me. And why am I not surprised that religion lies at the heart of it. Religion and tribalsim...perfect together.
