Name ONE statement which is originally from Jesus.

To explain what I mean by "originally from Jesus" I mean something that he came up with.

For example "do unto others..." etc - the golden rule does not count since it was known by people of the time prior to Jesus. So also is other "wisdom of the day" statements ruled out.

So, the challenge is simple - search through your bible and find ONE statement which was not "wisdom of the day" (i.e. commonly known sayings that was recognized as "wise words" at the time) or which can be traced back to other people prior to Jesus. This automatically rule out any OT rephrased statement in the NT.

Authentic to whom? Luke 11:1 seems to suggest that the "Our Father" prayer might originally have come from John the Baptist.

And it came to pass, in his being in a certain place praying, as he ceased, a certain one of his disciples said unto him, `Sir, teach us to pray, as also John taught his disciples.' (YLT)

Maybe.. It's in Q, and Jesus uses the word "Father" throughout Mark. The operative word is probably. The original prayer may have originated with John the Baptist.

A N Wilson in "Jesus" says "Verily verily I say unto you" sounds personal. Is it?

Jesus uses the word "Father" throughout Mark? Only three times in reference to God, as far as I could see. Surely you mean John, right?

We can't be sure Jesus was a single real person, let alone state what he may have said. Assuming that he was a real indivual, recall that the gospels (at least the cannonical ones) were written decades after Jesus lived and died. And that the earliest papyrus and codexes pain a very different picture of the LORD and savior than do the gospels in their modern form.

I'm not an expert in Greek (or any of the other languages), so I simply do not know. I recall reading something about this from the Jesus Seminar. The NAB Catholic translation has good commentary, except that it is "tethered" to the Church's antiquated beliefs!

Assuming Jesus existed and that the gospels are accurate (I don't, but for the purposes of this discussion I will), then here are a few goodies:

I come not to bring peace but a sword...
Hate your family...
Let the dead bury their dead.
I am the way the truth and the life, no man come to the father but through me.
Man was not made for sabbath, but sabbath for man.
The filth that comes out of our mouths (bad things we say) is worse than poor hygeine (although hygeine was the only defense of bacterial disease before modern medicine).

Jesus was pro religious war, antifamily, uncaring of grief, narcissistic, disobeyed the 10 commandments when it suited him, and did not think proper hygeine was important. Sounds profound to me!
In all fairness, I intentionally picked obscure and odd statements, but I wanted to have fun with this.
