A footnote in the NIV gives "only begotten Son" as an alternative to "one and only Son." Which means the perversion must be between "everlasting" vs. "eternal." Or is it "whosoever" vs. "whoever"?

I guess the author of this article objected to the words "only begotten Son" being put only in a footnote in the NIV.

The problem here is with translating the Greek word MONOGENH = unigenitum in Latin = "only begotten" in English. So this has nothing to do with the underlying Greek texts, because both the Byz and the Egyptian Greek versions feature MONOGENH.

NIV has taken a bit of a liberty with translating this word, and the biblical literalists do tend to object to this sort of thing...
