The problem here is with translating the Greek word MONOGENH = unigenitum in Latin = "only begotten" in English. So this has nothing to do with the underlying Greek texts, because both the Byz and the Egyptian Greek versions feature MONOGENH. NIV has taken a bit of a liberty with translating this word, and the biblical literalists do tend to object to this sort of thing... And to answer conkermaniac, this website, http://www.av1611.org/niv.html doesn't really have much to do with my arguments. I just posted it as an illustration of how some folks feel about NIV.
