Please. Let's not be overly simplistic on either side of the "Hype vs. Report" question.

It is well evidenced that commercial media has a habit of reporting selected information geared toward provoking emotional reactions which will increase their ratings. Even when, no ulterior motive is involved, there can be a fair amount of distortion involved in translating scientific findings into publicly comprehensible language.

It is also not unheard of, for the researchers [edit] and governmental agencies [/edit] themselves to either selectively report or even fudge their findings, in order to receive funding or enhance their standings.

Whatever the cause or motivations involved, the result is a public that believes this virus is mutating on a direct course toward human contagion.
