Question 7th Day Adventists = whackos?

I just found out that my step-sister's husband is a 7th Day Adventist, and that his whole family is deep into the movement.

I knew my step-sister's husband was religious, but I recently became alarmed/interested when he and my step-sister refused to celebrate Christmas with our side of the family because we have a Christmas tree and Santa Claus decorations, which they claim are "not the reason for the season."

They are holding their two small sons hostage, and threatening to cut off contact with my step-dad (the boys' grandpa) because he wants to dress up as Santa and give the boys their gifts.. LOL.

As a way of showing how great their religion allegedly is, they told my mom that 7th Day Adventists "live longer than any other people on earth," which is a clear lie. I looked it up, and yes, according to some guy at Loma Linda, they do live longer than most Californians, but that is probably because they eat whole grains, veggies, and avoid red meat... hardly proof of "Godly" intervention.

I also read on beliefnet that they come from a Baptist background, and they literally believe the earth was created in 7 days, LESS THAN 10,000 years ago! Is this true? If so, they are hardcore fundy/creationists!

Can anyone give me information about this 7th Day Adventists church?

Wow you make them sound like an mind controling cult. I was raised as an 7 th day adventist. my family celebrated christmas. There was an christmas tree in our church.
Adventists got their healh message from Ellen White who lived in the 1800's. Adventist claim she was an Prophet and base alot of their doctrines on her visions. Actually her "visions" were an result from an hit on the head. she also plagerzied from other authors.
They orginated from the Millerite movement. William Miller and his follows believed that christ would return to earth between 1843-1844. When nothing happed the group broke up. Adventists came up with another explaination why christ did not return. He went to the most holy place.
When I was an member of that church, they always claimed that they are the true church. All other christians were in error. Hope this helps

Thanks, Lunawalk. Did your church deny Evolution?

I wonder if my relatives might be in some kind of extreme or fundamentalist splinter of 7th Day?... or if this whole "reason for the season" madness is mainstream nowadays for the whole church?

Yes my church did deny evolution. I left the church around twenty years ago. I don't know what going on now. I think your relatives are upset that christ is not in christmas. Christmas or giftmas is an holiday with an christian front. They got it from the Romans. they think it full of pagan symbols.

So if they changed their name to the Seventh Era Adventists, would they have it right?

I have some ex-in-laws that are Seventh Day Adventists. They aren't that much wackier than most religious folk, it seemed to me. I learned that they rather have us visit on Sunday versus Saturday since Saturday is their "Sabbath" and they are restricted as to their allowable activities on that day.

Regarding red meat: My ex sister-in-law always serves beef roast. No caffeine for them, though she'd make coffee for me. I do remember mention of "veggie-puckies" that replaced hamburgers at the school my ex-niece attended, so maybe you're really supposed to avoid beef.

Don't get me started about SDA's. There are plenty here. They tend to overpopulate the government sector as private industry is (rightly) less tolerant of lazy bastards who won't work on Saturdays. They are fundy's, extract their tithes and are intolerant of local customs and culture. They do eat red meat but not pork or shellfish out of following the ridiculous OT dietary laws. Pig is the only domestic animal and source of protein in many areas here. Probably my main dislike of SDA's is a personal and subjective one, I have never met in any other religious group a higher proportion of outright liars and hypocrites than there are among SDA's. Add to that their regular armageddon dates, which quietly fail to get mentioned again when they don't happen, and there is a lot to dislike about this cult.

In my time on the net, I've come across a few SDAs, and a few exSDAs. They are, in that limited experience, whackier than most religious folk. The tales the exSDAs told were very similar to the exJWs. Who also had armaggedon dates of their own.

SDA is a nasty cult, IMV.
