Default Stupidest Evolutionary arguments.

I think it is only fair that we start a thread listing all the stupid evolutionary arguments put forth since we have a thread about stupid creationist arguments. There are idiots on both sides when it comes to argumentation. This is not a thread about which is true just stupid arguments we have all heard.

Guys you know you have heard some pro darwinist arguments that have made you cringe. Lets have em. I'll start with a few.

"All scientists agree that evolution is true."
Even if that was the case that does not make it true.

"Even the pope accepts evolution"
Who cares?

I will add some more as I remember them. My mind is a little fried tonight.

Are these honestly the best you can come up with? And the point of the second one is that evolution isn't only accepted by atheists or is some atheistic conspiracy as there are quite a number of theists who accept the ToE.

Could you show where someone supporting evolution has put this forward as an argument in favour of evolution?

This is not an argument in favour of evolution. It is an argument against the common creationist lie that one cannot be a Christian and 'believe in evolution'.

By "arguments", I presume you actually mean "interpretation of evidence"?

Unless of course, God decided all apes could not synthesize vitamin C (well, we eat fruit anyway, so no loss), and that all cats could not taste sweetness (hey, they'll thank God for saving them unnecessary tooth decay), and that whales really need all the bones for a five-digit hand in their fins, y'know, just in case they find a tin opener and a can of sardines...

No, it just makes it probable that it's true. Appeal to authority isn't a logical fallacy, only an appeal to an unqualified authority. But because people can be mistaken the arguement is inherently probabilistic.

appeal to any authority is a fallacy when the argument takes the form "something is true because so and so says it is true" - evidence can trump even the greatest of minds. Granted that a relevant authority can lend legitimacy to an argument, but nothing becomes true on someone's say so.

"Even the pope accepts evolution"

...This one might be a little dated. JP2 did, but I'm not sure about Benny.

these are really really weak, and I have never actually seen them used

Okay, I'll have a go.

"There are plenty of transitional fossils."
Like, how do you know these things are related? Just because they are similar does not mean that one is ancestral to another.

"All scientists agree that evolution is true."

Well, it isn't quite correct, but comments such as this are typically used against creationists who have been taught to believe that "scientific opinion is divided on this issue", and that kids should be "taught both sides of this scientific controversy".

There is no scientific controversy on this issue. I don't see why informing creationists of this situation is a "stupid evolutionist argument".
