I don't know if a separate piece specficially directed at Collins was published, but Kloppenborg does address it in his Excavating Q (or via: amazon.co.uk) (2000: 145-6 n.61). His reply, after briefly quoting Collins, starts off with "This is a straw-man argument..." and finishes with "Collins's misunderstanding is tediously repeated by others: Horsley 1994:736; Witherington 1994:216; D. Allison 1997:4-5."

That's what I was refering to. Thanks. I knew he addressed it somewhere. I remember the "tediously repeated" claim.

I feel that the whole focus on the Sayings Tradition is misplaced to begin with. Behind it is the belief that the sayings somehow had a better chance to preserve the original meaning of the Faith. But it's far more likely that they were added and embellished later on top of other stuff.

For the same reason, the Gospel of Thomas isn't so likely to have preserved the original meaning of the Faith either.

Cheers,

Yuri.

How much of Thomas is the question. There's no doubt that Thomas isn't exactly what Jesus was thinking, nor was it original to the faith. That isn't the question here. You're arguing something of a strawman.
