Default The essence of prayer

I wrote in another thread:

Essentially, take for a moment a view of your relationship with your chosen god as one between a parent and a child. A child who constantly asks for new toys isn't likely to get them very often. However, a child who asks for help with their homework, or for mommy to make them feel better during an illness, is likely to get some help or a cup of orange juice or whatever they need.

This is similar to the "dullard" approach to religion. Take, for instance, wicca. There are tons of books out there that tell you how to "cast spells to make money" and crap - there are Christians who pray for God to give them money - those are approaches that don't have a very sophisticated view of their relationship with god, or the purpose of religion. Prayer or spell casting or whatever doesn't make something happen - it focuses the spirit to help YOU make something happen.

Savvy? Or do I need more examples?

The problem with prayer is that it is intangible. How can you know if a particular outcome or event is the result of prayer. A feeling you get?

Well, prayer is much like meditation. So yes, a "feeling you get". Much like a sixth sense, or a third eye, or whatever you want to call it. It is self-enrichment. God doesn't exist as a person or decision maker or granter of wishes - it exists as a force to be tapped.
