I've been reading up on Pilate lately and I keep getting these explanations for why he might have crucified Jesus.
Read Dom Crossan, WHo Killed Jesus (short version). Read Paula Fredriksen Jesus of Nazareth. Browse some of R. Brown's pertinent material in Death of the Messiah. Also E.P. Sanders in Jesus and Judaism. These are possibly some of the best current treatments of the historicity of these indicents. It is a balanced listing. They do not all agree exactly and some disagree sharply.

Does Kirby's HJ Pamphelt have the death of Jesus? Maybe a "Theories of the Death of the Historical Jesus" guide is in order.

Good question. In hypothetical Jesus case any explanation is possible given the contradiction among the sources. The Synoptic Gospels refer the arrest by a crowd from chief priest, elders and scribes, but according GJohn, is a Roman military cohort (aided by officers from the chief priests and Pharisees,) who proceeds to the detention. In this last case it is unlikely the ulterior process under Pilate, Jesus would possibly have been executed "in situ", existing precedents, being agitators (AJ xviii, 85). In another case it is unlikely that Jesus has appeared personally before the Governor from Judea to be judged, this is simply a magnification in the Gospels. The Military Governor from Judea was not in charge personally of such matters (common crimes, religious).
