EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

There’s no shortage of faith for the victims of Katrina

BY STAN TINER

Sun Herald

The old saying that you don't find atheists in foxholes would certainly be true if you inserted "hurricane" for "foxholes."

One's sense of mortality is made manifest in the hard winds of a great storm so that homage to God seems much in order, not only for the believer but perhaps even for the fence-straddler on matters of faith.

You might say the tie goes to God in such matters.

Surely, God was given much reverence during Katrina, and afterward. Generally the plea is for mercy in the former, while thanks is appropriate for the latter.

Religion isn't just a seasonal practice here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is well integrated into the lives of most of those who live here, with a majority attending at least Sunday services. Many also attend midweek prayer service or additional masses. Mississippians are also the most charitable of all Americans per capita, and much of that is given to their children.....

Senseless death, destruction, and chaos. Evidence of a loving, merciful creator if I ever saw any.

Those message board people should share their opinions with the editors of the newspapers. Darrell, thanks for the action alert heads-up.

News reports indicate some people walked out of a church service in the area (I think it was Catholic.) They had the angle that people were just so distraught, but there may be a different explanation...

Images of people walking out of churches because they are disgusted with what is being said inside would be powerful.
