I am asking this question because I am interested in how some of you feel about sad moments in sci-fi movies.

For me, the saddest moment came from the movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. It took place when Kirk and the crew decided to destroy the Enterprise. My mother, who also is a trekkie, took me to see the movie when I was about 12. It moved me then an it does to this day. It is hard to watch the Enterprise streak through the sky in flames.

Another is the words Kirk spoke during spocks funeral. "of all the souls i've encountered during my travels, his was the most... human." Very sad.

I am greatly interested in what you all can come up with.

I feel that the saddest moment in sci-fi film history is when Darth Vader has his final words with Luke aboard the second Death Star, followed by Luke setting him ablaze on the wood pyre.

I think the final scene with vader talking to luke was the saddest for me.

Out of all the Star Trek movies, the Wrath of Khan scene from when Spock goes into the reactor to when he dies on the other side of the glass does it for me...

Blade Runner had a generally melancholy mood to it, and the scene where Rutger Hauer (?) talks about "tears in the rain" (or whatever the full quote was) could be described as sad, though that might not be the best word. Gattaca inspired a similar "sorta-sad" mood in me...

Enemy Mine had some sad moments, and the Terminator 2 molten steel scene at the end was kind of weepy (though now I see it as the governor of California melting, and the pathos isn't as strong).

In the Babylon 5 movie In the Beginning, there's a scene where the president of the Earth Alliance calls upon every available ship to take to the skies to hold the line against the attacking Minbari. The entire scene is sad, but hopeful and very powerful.

The actress who delivered the following absolutely nailed it:

Totally agree.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.
