Where the General Operarions Director says "you shall reign dominion over the wild things" in Genesis, the phrase 'reign dominion over' should be recovered/edited to read '"be stewards over" or 'nurturers of' the flora and fauna and their various natural habitats'. Please edit your Old Testaments appropiately. This edification better represents the authors' original intent.

I don't know if the culture that wrote this had ownership in mind vs. a more "caring for" attitude. Certainly there have been other cultures in history that looked upon ownership of land or possessions as a foreign idea.

But either way, they both imply responsibility, and that I agree would be a good rule to follow, religion or not. We're not doing too well with it as of late... |

This idea for the edit suggested above was suggested by my mother, who has a degree in Art History, and knows more about religion than the pope. It would solve a lot problems if the Genesis sections of the Od Testiment were expeditiously and judiciously corrected, don't you think?

And the fiction section is where you go to find psychological and social "truth" anyway. Where do they put 1984, for example, or The Handmaid's Tale? Back to the point of translation, though... How is it different to "rule" or to "steward", when one can do either badly or well? In fact, upon examination I don't see much difference between the two words. --doug |
