If someone told me that Jesus loved me when I was a my lowest ebb on life I would not think it was a good thing to say, my instinct would come into it and I would think in terms as to what are they after. But that would be from an educated situation, If I was not into this religion is just a form of mind control stuff you are correct I would feel different about the Jesus stuff, and there you have it, its all down to taking advantage of someone down on their luck, nothing more than that, just control, no God, no Jesus just me and my problems.
