AJC has another article out about the standards.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/met...urriculum.html

Quote:
The biology revision was eagerly awaited by a strongly organized network of scientists, university professors and classroom teachers. Several teachers and professors say they are pleased the state adopted large sections of the national standards, which include a strengthened explanation of the nature of science, the function and structure of cells and genetics.

But the treatment of evolution prompted a backlash. More than 600 Georgians, including professors and teachers, by Wednesday had signed an online petition challenging the curriculum as misguided.
And that was in little over a day!

Two responses to my opinoin appeared in the paper. The first one was not written in response to my opinion, since he sent it in before my oped was published. (He's on the same GA science listserve as me.)

Anybody want to respond to the "just a theory" crap?

Quote:
EVOLUTION
It's just a theory; don't imply it's fact

One reason the Department of Education pulled mention of evolution from its standards is visible in Reed A. Cartwright's article: Nowhere is the word "theory" mentioned.

Cartwright can no more prove the Big Bang happened than I can prove that God created the universe. I assume he is fine with the fact that leftist, secular scientists and historians took God out of textbooks long ago. Yet he accuses the DOE of the same kind of thing -- removing the theory of our origins from science books.

I don't have a problem with my child being taught the theory of evolution, so long as the teacher isn't implying it's fact. And if we're going to be fair, that same teacher should cover the theory of Creation.

We're starting to get national coverage. NY Times, LA Times, maybe ABC news have been talking to the NCSE and GCISE.

No one has called me yet.

Probably because my number is listed under Wildy's maiden name. There might be messages on the lab phone. Maybe I should go in....

'Evolution' is only a Buzz Word

Quote:
Cox said the concept of evolution would still be taught under the proposal, but the hot-button word would not be used.
Bullshit. Half-taught is more likely since "macroevolutionary" concepts were removed.

Hmm? What macroevolutionary concepts were they teaching that they've removed?

They removed macroevolutionary concepts from the AAAS benchmarks to make the proposed GA ones.

Look at the fifth post in the thread for some examples.

There is also good news on the curriculum front:
Rufus,

Could you pass on a reference for that? The basic idea might come in handy real soon in Ohio.
