That's exactly right. That's why those C. S. Lewis-style arguments that mankind has always believed in God, therefore there must be a God, don't hold water.

There's no consistency in this god-belief that supposedly has permeated all of mankind down through the ages. Even if there were, what would it mean? It would just mean that in a tiny segment of the eons that the universe has existed and will exist, there was a species that lived on earth that had a propensity to need to explain things, and belief in a god or gods was one of the ways they did this.

It will take the extinction of the human race for god-belief to end. So long as we exist, we will be forever plagued with religion.

Something like that. Really, I don't think the problem is Christianity per se (or Muslims or Hindu's or any other religion). The problem is fundamentalism. Fundies think they are God's chosen and the rest of us are devils. They want everybody to believe as they do and are intolerant and closed minded. Fundies of all flavors are more prone to start holy wars and crusades, fly airplanes into buildings, and drop bombs on small children - all in the name of god.

Unfortunately, I think there will always be a percentage of humanity with this distortion of psychology which tends them toward fundamentalism. The lions are the best answer, except that I don't believe in cruelty to animals. :devil1:

How is it cruelty. They get a tasty fundie snack. In fact, we can turn them into Fundy Bites™ for the lions.

The first step is introducing atheism into the mainstream. We got homosexuals all over the TV these days. Regular people are realizing homosexuals are not evil. We need some good atheist characters on TV. There is probably a larger audience of skeptics and atheist then homosexuals. To all accounts Penn & Teller: Bullsh*t is doing great. And while they can be overly liberal, we should be very proud to finally get some active atheist on TV. Bill Maher is doing his part too. I saw him on Larry king not to long ago and was very impressed. But alas he is on cable too. We need to hit the networks with our view points. Once they are out there easily for the joe blow public to consume it can only be a matter of time. I think theism will be below 25% world wide by the end of the century with most of that being deist.
