I don't like so much division between religious groups that they are killing each other, or so little that they start working together to influence government policy.
Unfortunately theocrats aren't so stupid as to suggest establishing Pentecostalism or some such thing as the official religion. They usually try for things that will get wide support among the religious. Like having school-children recite a pledge acknowledging the existence of God. Or diverting government money so that churches can provide social services. So it remains to be seen whether Muslims will be harder to pull into their schemes, or easier. As for the vote drive, I don't see how it would be possible to change the tax status of a religion because a political group targets it. So unless the political organizing is actually done by a church, there's nothing the government can, or should do about it. My preference would be that political groups and churches have the same tax status, so this wouldn't be an issue. |
