Having 12% of people give an incorrect answer on a multiple choice question is not the same thing as saying 12% of the population is running around with that idea fixed in their head.
Most simply do not know who Joan of Arc was, and probably picked that answer because it sounded better than the others. You could substitute some equally absurd thing like "Arc of the covenant" and have fun with that too. If you used "Jehanne d'Arc" or else either her mother or father's surname with correct French pronunciation you'd get more correct guesses and it would not mean they had known who she was. Not an apology for appalling mass ignorance. Just a comment on being careful about interpreting results with this methodology. |
