The petition has over 300 signatures now.

A message went out on evoldir this morning. For those of you not familiar with it, evoldir is an international listserver for evolutionary biology. It's still getting a lot of in state signers, but a lot of out of state and out of country signers are starting to show up.

Over 500 signatures now!

There is also good news on the curriculum front:

Quote:
The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has called
for a close examination of the new curriculum by our faculty, and
particularly by the USG Academic Committees in each discipline
affected. Reportedly the DoE has actually asked for feedback (better
late than never?!). Since you all have been on the front lines of
the issue, please pass any relevant information such as the AAAS/GA
comparisons on to your Academic Cmtee reps (or volunteer to help them
write the response).

The only negative response I have received so far is from a high school science teacher who thinks that the changes from the AAAS benchmarks was to "lighten" the standards so they can be taught in 180 days. (I don't think she has done the comparison.)

I didn't know it took so long to say "evolution."

Congrats on your editorial in today's AJC, Rufus. I read it early this morning.

I didn't know there was a thread here but another science educator I know just sent the members of the Atlanta Freethought Society the information about the petition and I think I'm #544 on it.

Keep on keepin' on!

I sent the link yesterday to the contact address of the AFS. I'm glad someone has sent it on to the group.

Comment from signer #682

My parents didn't teach me about sex, and I became a parent at age 15. My minister didn't teach me to respect all other people, regardless of their beliefs, and I spent 8 months in prison for a hate crime. The media didn't tach me respect for myself, and I struggle daily from bulemia. My parents didn't teadh me about credit cards, and I'm now over $45,000 in debt. My doctor didn't teach me bout smoking, and I now have cancer. My school didn't teach me about evolution, and now I'm an ignorant fool from Georgia.
