So I've heard. But the people I've heard it from cannot agree on anything about him except that he was crucified by Pilate. Concerning his teachings, there seems to be nothing on which all historicists agree.

I agree

What can we really know from what version we are left with?

I think there are a few certainties, even though im a minimalist

if i recall correctly there is a verse in which jesus says to his deciples to obey the pharisees because they sit in moses' seat but not to obey thier hypocracy or something like that.
Nope because we was also writing to a semi christian version of the movement in a jewish context.

This is just my opinion, but Jesus didnt like the Pharisees "if" we follow the 7 woes, where he calls them hypocrites. again, who was the source of what he said?? because thats key to understanding the context.

We should realize, that jesus started his movement in judaism and ment it to stay there. he wanted a more pure version that wasnt infected by romans as the current jewish governement of his time was. Jesus would have held the OT in high regards.

What were left with is a roman version that amounts to jesus enemy, with matthew even though he is writing to a jewish christian sect, it still has the roman foundation laid down before hims.

confusing

I doubt there was any historical Jesus, so I don't think there was anything for us to know about him.

If there was a historical Jesus, I'd say we can know that he had a few disciples who started a new religion in his name sometime after Pilate had him crucified for reasons we know nothing about. Beyond that, anyone's guess is as good as anyone else's. Barring the discovery of new documents reliably dated to his lifetime or soon thereafter, additional details about him have been irretrievably lost to history.
