Thy tried that at one point, but he just evaded them, walked through the crowd like a ghost.

John 8:58 :I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

The answer is that there was no trial before the Sanhedrin in the first place. Mark's arrest and trial by the High Priest is an apologetic fiction designed to minimize Roman culpability in the crucifixion and blame it on Jews.

Or, as an alternative interpretation, they did stone jesus (and then hanged him from a tree), and the crucifixion is the apologetic fiction. Blame could have been shifted back and forth between the Jews and the Romans several times, as new authors changed and added to the previous story. It's really hard to know for sure which one, if either, might be closer to reality.

Good one Toto,

. . . walked through the crowds like a ghost, just like he walked through the walls to get into the upper room where he said "this is my body."

You stone the Jew to keep her in line and crucify the Jew to set him free from Judaism.

Chili, not only is this is a meaningless absurdity but it is borderline anti-semetic. Jews are not enslaved by Judaism.

Why do you insist on wasting Infidels' bandwidth with this mental masturbation? It neither instructs nor entertains. Bandwidth costs money, Chili. Posts have to be read by moderators. You could have the same effect on the world talking to the mirror, at far less cost to others. Perhaps you should think about exploring some other forum.

BTW I have seen on Jewish fora the claim that execution by stoning was carried out not by throwing stones at the victim but by tossing the victim onto stones - off a cliff or a roof. I haven't seen anything approaching evidence for this claim though.

Stoning did not involve "throwing" stones but placing them (big boulders!) on the prone body until they expire from suffocation. Usually there would be a plank of wood between the body and the stones as well.

It was just another way of killing someone without breaking the skin.

Sorry Vorkosigan, I got carried away there for a moment.

I am here to learn, sir, and wonder why the bible qoute of Toto has people picking up stones while others claim that people were thrown into stones or sqaushed under them. Surely if "stoning" was such a popular event in those days should our experts not know whether the stones were thrown or the people were thrown?

Btw, did you notice the her-him switch in my post?

They are probably saying this because they are trying to make their holy book look less barbaric than it really is.

Where is the evidence for this? If you look at the book of Exodus, you can get a clue as to what stoning really entailed:

Exodus 19:12-13
Be careful that you do not go up the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. He shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on him.

Notice the qualifier "not a hand is to be laid on him" and notice the two methods recommended to kill the perpetrator which would accomplish this goal. Both can be accomplished at a distance. Pushing someone off a cliff or holding/tying him down and piling rocks on top would both involve laying hands on him. Shooting with arrows or throwing stones at him would not.

a tactic later perfected by Reagan,, Bush I and now Bush II

women were second class citizens and those targeted for stoning were prejudged as sinners. JC was a "counter culture" leader whose followers could turn on those who'd executed him...
