Pretty much. That's what Price is alleging.

In the April 16 podcast, Price says that Ehrman has responded to this by claiming that is how all scholars do it - farm out basic research to their graduate students.

I dunno . . . I think a graduate student might try to tell him what he wanted to hear . . .

Can anyone imagine Bruce Metzger writing something so banal, and error laden as Ehrman's most recent tome?

Wow! I can't believe I'm hearing this.

Actually, I'm not , as I haven't heard this Bible Geek podcast.

But if what Price is saying is true, when I listen to it, this is just amazing!

On 16 April Bible Geek podcast, Price claims at about the 29 minute mark that Ehrman has responded that it is common procedure to get graduate students to read the books, and not read them himself.

Amazing!

Did Ehrman really admit that he did not read the books himself?

Price calls not reading the books 'disgraceful' and 'disgusting'.

If Ehrman was working with extracts or summaries, that would certainly explain a few things, e.g. Ehrman's Most Bizarre Criticism Of All Against Doherty.

Can you give us a rough date for the episode? I'd like to try to find that one. I don't listen to the show as regularly as I used to.

I have to say that, on the basis of Neil Godfrey's quotations , Earl Doherty's position in JNGM appears both decidedly complicated and rather different from his views in JP.

I would not find it surprising if Bart Ehrman based his critique of Doherty primarily on JP and paid less attention to the complications introduced in JNGM.

Ehrman certainly wrote the book, but Price is saying that it's based on research that his students did.
Ehrman strenuosly denies any such thing, and claims it is a flat-out lie, although the usual suspects are claiming it is perfectly OK for Ehrman not to have read the mythicist books.

Personally, I was just astonished to hear Price's claim.

Metzger wasn't exactly Hunter S. Thompson.

That wouldn't surprise me either, Andrew. Richard Carrier actually recommended to Ehrman that he base his critique on the earlier edition. But perhaps you'll allow me to rephrase: Bart Ehrman did not read Doherty as carefully as Neil Godfrey did. That much is incontestable.

You can't just rely on hearsay to make this sort of accusation, even if you trust the source (Steven Styles, the apparent source, is frequently mentioned in flattering terms on Price's podcast).
