Default Non-Catholic marriage?

not sure if this is the right forum for this or not, sorry

a friend and i were talking the other day and had a good laugh b/c she was like "oh, i've already got my whole marriage and everything planned out exactly how i want it to go and everything" and so on and so forth, well, me not really seeing myself as catholic by the time it comes around for me to get married and most people here being atheist, i'm just curious, what do yall do for marriages and stuff if it's not in a catholic church? (i've just been raised catholic so that's the only thing i really know...)

edit: oh, heh, and i'm still in highschool, i'm not planning on getting married anytime soon, it was just a curious question that i'll store the information away for much later when i need it

I plan to not marry, not to be confused with your situation of simply not having plans.

You have already made the transition from the assumptions of your old worldview about how a wedding should be. Perhaps you should examine the assumption that getting married is something you will definitely be doing in the future. Is this assumption valid? Is it the result of the same social pressure that caused you to at one point call yourself Catholic?

Then again, I'm probably full of shit. Everybody gets married, right? Its what you are supposed to want.

Well, the best places to look for styles of secular marriages are, of course, Catholic countries. All the remarriages after divorces (except, of course, if your name happens to be Grimaldi...)!

In fact, it is quite an individual decision how much effort to put into the festivities (if any).

I've been to a few weddings in my life. Here is a list of the venues:

a Catholic church

a Methodist church

a United Church of Christ (Conservative Congregational) church

a synagogue

a college chapel

Pike Island in the Mississippi River

two in parks

two inside park buildings

two in the yard attached to the reception area

the groom's parents' backyard

If I ever get married, I plan on doing it outside somewhere nice without a priest. You can always get a government guy or a sea captain to do it.

Our best friend got his 'ordination' from the UU church so he could preside at the ceremony.

I wrote the vows, and we had a very small, private ceremony. You can get ordained by the UU via the internet.

Cheers,
Lane

My daughter just got married in April, the wedding ceremony and reception were held in the local Marriott, I wrote the ceremony, and a member of this board did a fantastic job of performing the wedding ceremony. Secular all the way and fantastic.
