Thanks for these suggestions. "Meme" might work but there is alot of metaphysical baggage tied to it -- perhaps not a fatal flaw if the use was carefully defined.

"Unit" and "block" might be good enough -- I admittedly have no specific goal, I just thought it would be interesting to trace, say, the Second Law of Thermodynamics argument through the decades.

"Canard" isn't bad though, not exactly neutral, but accurate:

Why not combine the two best terms without being too obvious about all that pesky baggage:

Myth + meme = myme
