Actually, I think it's Tertullian doing the work. If for example you look at Mk 6:1ff, which is the synagogue story, it only talks of his hometown. It's Luke who inserts Nazareth into the story. Tertullian obviously knew the Lucan version.

Spin, I was beginning to think that Luke may have been the one that brought Nazareth into the story because he even ensures that Nazareth is the city of Joseph and Mary while Matthew (2:11) says they dwelt in a house in Bethlehem.

Matthew's 2:23 and 4:23 that says Jesus will be a Nazorean has got nothing to do with Nazareth but is a formula citation to do with prophecy. Brown, in Birth of The Mesiah, p101, writes: "That citation did not cause Matthew to invent the information that Jesus' family dwelt "in a city called Nazareth" such geographical information was part of the common gospel tradition".
So, Brown believes that Nazareth was part of the tradition. Of course I do not agree that there was 'any' tradition.

After hearing about the death of JBap, I believe that Luke takes Jesus to Nazareth while Matthew takes him to Capernaum - can't remember the verses right now. That too, would point to Luke as the one who pushed for Nazareth to be Jesus' hometown.

Thoughts?

What would you say to this spin?
