Matthew's 2:23 and 4:23 that says Jesus will be a Nazorean has got nothing to do with Nazareth but is a formula citation to do with prophecy. Brown, in Birth of The Mesiah, p101, writes: "That citation did not cause Matthew to invent the information that Jesus' family dwelt "in a city called Nazareth" such geographical information was part of the common gospel tradition". So, Brown believes that Nazareth was part of the tradition. Of course I do not agree that there was 'any' tradition. After hearing about the death of JBap, I believe that Luke takes Jesus to Nazareth while Matthew takes him to Capernaum - can't remember the verses right now. That too, would point to Luke as the one who pushed for Nazareth to be Jesus' hometown. Thoughts? What would you say to this spin? |
