Very common. Especially among Hasidic Jews, but also in non-Hasidic Orthodox Jewry. Such interpretations abound for deducing that we currently live in the End Times.

Haha! Don’t you believe it, there’s a software program called Gim (here, if you have some facility with Hebrew) for finding nonsense gematric correspondences. Standard response from Orthodox Jews: such use of gematria is an unholy misuse. Apparently if you find “snake” and “messiah” to be of the same numeric value (which they are—358), that’s “holy use”, but if you find “yeshivah student” and “robot” to be the same numeric value (which they are too, but I don’t remember right now), that’s called an unholy misuse.
